CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) – For many children, the start of a new school year is only days away and that’s why several organizations are making sure kids have what they need to start the new season off on the right foot.
It happened Saturday morning at the Walmart on Signal Mountain Road.
Police and deputies purchased school supplies for approximately 150 elementary school kids who are considered under-privileged.
The money to purchase those supplies comes from public donations to the International Brotherhood of Police Officers.
Members of the local 673 chapter say this event also helps to build bridges between law enforcement and the community.
Fortunately, those officers and deputies were able to get more bang for their buck because Tennessee is one of 17 states offering a sales tax holiday this weekend.
There’s no sales tax on clothing items and school supplies of $100 or less.
Computers priced under $1,500, calculators, backpacks and tablets are also tax free.
